Fireworks Cause Truck Fire

EL PASO, Texas —

At 10:45 p.m. Wednesday neighbors came knocking on Joe Morales’ door after they saw his 2004 Dodge Ram up in flames. The group tamed the flames using a garden hose and a fire extinguisher.

“We came out and saw the flames as tall as the trees. I asked myself; “Why did this happen? Who would do this?’” said Morales.

The truck was parked on Manuel Acosta Drive in front of Morales’ home he said he suspected arson as soon as it happened.

In the charred remains a fire investigator found a smoke bomb on the driver’s seat. Morales said he had left his windows slightly opened earlier because of the heat.

“It seems like we have one or two instances of people using fire works in a vehicle around this time of year,” said Greg Whited, fire investigator with the Fire Marshall’s office.

Although Morales doesn’t believe he was targeted Whited believes he was. Last week someone egged the truck and a couple of homes in the neighborhood.

If you have information that might help investigators call the Fire Marshall’s office 771-1090.
