Fire Set In Family's Front Yard

EL PASO, Texas —

A 911 call led firefighters to a burning palm tree in the middle of an East El Paso family's front yard early Thursday morning.

Crews were called to a home on Mettler Drive just before 1 a.m. to find a large palm tree on fire. Crews were able to contain the fire in less than half an hour and quickly ruled the fire to be suspicious.

The sirens and flashing lights brought several residents outside. They told KFOX that they believe the fire was set by people leaving the bars nearby on Hawkins Boulevard.

"As long as the clubs are open we have these problems. All the cars parked here and vandalizing our property, and so forth," said Patricia Huelga, who lives in the area.

Firefighters said they could not determine who caused the fire and have no suspects. Damage was limited to the palm tree and no one was injured.
