Fire prevention week promotes safety exit plan

EL PASO, Texas —

The El Paso Fire Department wants people to have a plan in case a fire breaks out.

To mark Fire Prevention Week, fire officials and the National Fire Protection Association are teaming up to encourage residents to Have Two Ways Out!

According to NFPA, members of one-third of American households did not know they had less than six minutes to escape a fire.

"Fire is unpredictable and spreads faster than most people realize," EPFD Fire Marshal Calvin Shanks said. "Having an escape plan and practicing it is essential to ensuring your family's safety should fire break out in your home."

Firefighters will have an Open House Fire Prevention event to promote the Have Two Ways Out! campaign on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

El Pasoans can learn more about the importance of fire escape planning, practice, prevention and sign up for a free smoke alarm.

The EPFD recommends the following tips for planning your family's escape:

• Make a map of your home. Mark a door and a window that can be used to get out of every room.

• Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home. This is where everyone can meet once they've escaped. Draw a picture of your outside meeting place.

• Write the emergency telephone number for the fire department on your escape plan.

• Sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape plan with everyone living in your home while everyone is sleeping.

• Keep your escape plan on the refrigerator and have your family practice the plan twice a year or whenever anyone in your home celebrates a birthday.
