Fire Officials Warn Of Firework Danger

June 30, 2006 —

There are many different types of fireworks in El Paso County from which buyers can choose, but most of them are a fire hazard. That's why officials warn people to use their fireworks at least 10 feet away from dry brush.

"We've had a couple of fires, a couple of accidents, but we've put them out ourselves. We don't call the fire department; we've got our own fire extinguishers," says Carlos Marrufo, TNT Firework stand manager.

Marrufo said the small fireworks fires sparked in the past haven't been a problem, but that doesn't mean they can't be. "So, we're still very dry. It's (happened) just the past two or three days, so that's not enough time for the brush (to) turn green and prevent it from catching fire, so right now it is at high hazard," said Horizon City Fire Department Assistant Chief Kris Menendez.

The recent showers haven't been enough to ease the minds of fire officials. Despite being just a volunteer department, Horizon city firefighters have a plan. "We have been going around and checking out fireworks stands and enforcing our permits and the code," said Menendez.

The fireworks you won't find in the city or the county are bottle rockets and other missile-type fireworks, which are illegal because of the fire hazard. "Of course they have not allowed bottle rockets, there's not allowed any missiles with fins, so that has alleviated some of the fallout with the firework coming back to the ground and starting fires," said Menedez.

Fire officials will be checking for the sale of skyrocket and missile-style fireworks like the bottle rocket.

If you're caught with those, it's a class C misdemeanor and punishable by a fine of $500.

Last Fourth of July, Horizon city firefighters received 49 calls related to fireworks within a four-hour period.
