Fire Investigators Say Kids Started Blaze

Fire crews quickly put out the playground fire, but it was destroyed along with a nearby picnic area.

It happened just before 6 p.m. Monday at the Kennedy Estates.

An investigator with the El Paso Fire Marshal's Office said an 8 and 9 year old started the fire by gathering a bunch of paper, then lighting it with matches.

The investigator said both kids confessed to starting the fire, but because they are under 10 years old they will not be charged.

Both kids and their parents will have to attend the fire department's juvenile fire setter's program.

No injuries were reported.

Damage estimates have not yet been determined.
