Fire Department, Radio Station Collect Smoke Detectors

November 29, 2006 —

The El Paso Fire Department and a local radio station want more people to be prepared during an emergency situation.

That's why the El Paso Fire Department and 104.3 Hit FM will be hosting a smoke detector drive on Thursday.

The drive is being put together by a DJ at the radio station, who was related to former East El Paso State Senator Frank Madla, who died a week ago in a fire.

"When the fire occurred during the night, they didn't have an alarm notifying them that they had a fire in their home and unfortunately Mr. Frank Madla did die as a result of that fire," said Lt. Mario Hernandez

The fire department said they don't want anyone to be caught in this situation, so both the fire department and the radio station will be collecting them for needy families.

The drive will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at their new fire station on Pine Springs in East El Paso.
