Fire Damages Roof In Attempt To Heat Home

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. —

A makeshift heater cost a Sunland Park family their roof.

Now they worry how they'll deal with the cold.

A metal drum with burning wood inside seemed like a crafty way to stay warm, until the heat got out of control

Fire victim, Veronica Tarango said "I was inside the house then I started seeing the smoke coming out that is when I noticed it was burning the top of the house"

Salvador Salcedo with the Sunland Park Fire Department said, "Upon arrival we saw smoke coming up we thought it was the chimney at first then it turned out to be the attic area."

The cause of the fire was a 55-gallon drum the family had filled with wood and lit on fire for heat.

The flames got out of control catching the roof on fire.

"We are living in an area that people have low income and they try to warm up using anything possible,” said Salcedo.

The fire was quickly put out but now the family is without heat and without a roof.

"I'm going to need to fix my roof because I need my house to be fixed”, said Tarango.

No one was injured in the fire.

Authorities said the family is getting help from the red cross.

No word on how much it will cost to repair the damage.
