Fire Blazes On Hottest Day of the Year

Flames engulfed several bales of hay Tuesday afternoon at a dairy farm in Vado, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles. Firefighters said the heat may be to blame.

"A lot of times heat is a factor. It's called spontaneous combustion," Dona Ana County firefighter Eric Crespin said.

Dozens of firefighters monitored the fire all afternoon. Luckily, no one was injured, but thousands of dollars worth of hay is now destroyed.

Elsewhere, the triple-digit heat hurt business for workers at a fireworks stand.

"When the sun starts going down, you get a lot more customers. I've been here all day and no sales," Canutillo resident Jennifer Borjas said.

Workers did their best to keep cool by drinking plenty of cold water and resting in the shade.
