Final Chance To Give Input On Alameda Corridor

EL PASO, Texas —

The city of El Paso's planning division held its 12th, and final, public meeting Wednesday to seek input and ideas for the Alameda corridor.

Some residents want to up the curb appeal of Alameda and transform what they called an eyesore into an historical district.

"Right now none of the stores want to come in to Alameda because of the car lots," said Ana Duenez, of the lower valley.

District 3 Representative Emma Acosta said while the goal is to attract new businesses and services to the area, plans do not include pushing out already established car lots.

"Many of them have been there for many, many years," said Acosta. "And in no way, shape or form do we want any of those businesses to leave."

A 10-mile stretch from the intersection at Boone Street to the intersection at Americas Avenue will be included in future plans.

Acosta said some of the major concerns brought forth during past meetings include attracting more employment opportunities, day care and health care to the area.

"I think we can do a combination of things to actually make sure that we're doing something positive," said Acosta. "Bringing some more economic opportunities in that area."

Acosta said it will take four to five months for the development services department to compile all the ideas and develop potential plans of action.

Some changes to look for in the next 10 years could include increasing code enforcement in the area, adding pocket parks and developing median landscaping.
