EL PASO, Texas —

An east El Paso mother is concerned Ysleta Independent School District officials are not taking enough disciplinary action against a fifth-grade student who allegedly assaulted her daughter with a pocket knife.

Shannon Gomez said her 10-year-old daughter was standing outside of Pebble Hills Elementary after school let out when she was approached by another student who thought the girl was "spying" on him.

"He grabbed my daughter's arm and was waving the knife like this and there was a girl behind her and was waving it in front of her as well," Gomez said.

YISD officials said they immediately called El Paso police and took appropriate disciplinary measures.

However, Gomez said she expected the student to be expelled and not allowed on the same campus as her daughter. Instead, the student was reportedly only suspended for a few days and put into a special program.

According to Gomez, the student had the pocket knife confiscated the very next day from school. He was reportedly not expelled because he is a special-needs student.

"The principal told me he was segregated in a special program. It could be a week, it could be two days, it could be a month. I don't know when this young man is going to be put back in the same school with my daughter and in the same classroom."

Gomez said she decided to reach out to KFOX-14 News after hearing about corrective measures taken against a senior at Burges High School who was arrested for taken a dual-ring to school. The ring is considered a weapon under the Texas Penal Code. She said the cases are different but shows how different school districts work.
