Fans welcome beer sales at Saturday's homecoming game

By Veronica Macias

For the first time ever, UTEP fans got to enjoy the game with a staple in sports-watching -- a nice cold beer.

UTEP officials changed the policy because they felt it would help the game experience and help generate revenue at the games.

Sixteen-ounce beers were sold for $7and fans paid $9for 24-ounce beers.

Many fans heading into the game said they looked forward to the homecoming game where beers were for sale.

"Increase revenue. Make it more fan friendly. Why not," said one fan visiting from New Orleans to support Tulane.

"They sell it at Sunbowl and sell it at every other sporting event we go to,so why not here? It's good for the university to make a little revenue," said UTEP fan Mike Chesak.

Most college campuses discourage beer sells because they fear alcohol creates a bad atmosphere.

"It's a wise idea to cut them off at a certain limit and not let that person that is drinking," said Rebecca Montes.
UTEP officials cut beer sells during the third-quarter.

"As long as they don't act dumb and drive home like that," said Rebecca Montes.

Earlier in the week UTEP officials said beer sales would be monitored.

Once beer sales at UTEP games were announced, Mother Against Drunk Driving said fans need to monitor how much they drink.

"There is a responsibility that goes with it. And it just takes one time. This is something you do not mess with," said Virginia Gonzalez with MADD.

Some studies have been done to demonstrate that selling beer at college games actually helps reduce binge drinking.

El Paso police said there wasn't an increase in police presence in the area. However, according to spokesman Javier Sambrano, officers who worked west side area kept a close eye on the campus.
