Family talks to KFOX about their meeting with president

By Ric Dupont

EL PASO, Texas —

A family that spoke directly with President Barack Obama during a round table meeting talked with KFOX14 News.

Ramon and Maria Isela Rubalcava lost their daughter, Isela Rubalcava, 25, in Iraq in 2004.

When Obama visited Fort Bliss Friday, he made a special stop, a round table meeting with the Rubalcavas and two other families.

Sgt. Isela Rubalcava was killed when a mortar struck near her in Mosul.

The Canutillo High School graduate is believed to be the first El Paso woman ever killed in combat.

Her parents said they enjoyed meeting the president and appreciated his efforts to increase access to mental health care for soldiers returning from war. They especially liked the announcement that he plans on bringing 30,000 troops home from Afghanistan next month, and all of them home by 2014.

The family also met with President George W. Bush during an El Paso visit.

The family said nothing that any president can say will bring their daughter back.

"It's an honor to meet a president and have him be really close to you," Ramon Rubalcava said. "Regardless, my pain still exists. It's still there. It doesn't change and I can honestly say that's how I feel. Every time I get invited to Fort Bliss, it opens up the wound again."
