By Geoff Tyler and Dillon Sanders, Overland Police Department,
EL PASO, Texas —
A west El Paso man was killed by an alleged drunk driver in Kansas on Monday.
The music of 21-year old Carson Norris continues to echo in Dillon Sanders' memory.
"He's been playing music from before I even knew him. He and his brothers, Mitchell and LukeNorris, they would play shows together. They would sing together. They were truly talented," Sanders said.
On Monday, that ended when a truck allegedly rear-ended Carson's Honda CRV outside Kansas City, in Overland Park. The accident killed Norris, and injured his girlfriend.
"Somewhere around 1 or 2 in the morning the lights came on and I heard some crying and some talking. I heard they wrecked," Sanders said.
Police said 23-year-old Zachary Wempe, the driver of the truck, was drunk and speeding. He's facing charges of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence and aggravated battery.
"They made their choice, and it cost an innocent man his life, I guess that's all I can say about that. The fact is that I can't say goodbye to him. I wasn't there with him, but I do miss him very much," Sanders said.
Sanders said Carson was a religion person who was in the Kansas City area to attend International House of Prayer University and become a worship leader.
"His mom told me he was coming down to see us. I was pretty excited to see him," Sanders said.
Since he was in the sixth grade, Norris was his older stepbrother and friend.
"I just remember having a lot of questions and he was able to answer them for me. He showed me a good time at a hard time in my life. He just showed me a lot of love," Sanders said.
A member of the Norris family told KFOX 14 News that Carson's girlfriend, Bekah Ward, is doing better Thursday night. The family said they are still making funeral arrangements.
