Family Of 10 Has Hard Time Finding New Home

LAS CRUCES —

The Urbina family's trailer home burned to the ground, and they are attempting to find a place to rent, but with eight kids, they're getting turned down.

Victor Urbina, the father of eight and one on the way, called several rental properties, but said he was hung up on when he told them they had eight children.

The Red Cross helped with a motel room, but checkout time was 11 a.m. Wednesday.

“They're calling us from the front office. 'There is no more money for you guys so you've got to start packing up,'” said Urbina.

The Red Cross has extended the family’s stay for one more night.

The Las Cruces and Dona Ana County housing authorities say there are affordable housing options, but every situation is different.

“We have to sit down and go through their income, their family composition, just make sure that they qualify,” said Tom Hassel, executive director of the housing authorities.

The housing authority has a budget between $12 million to $15 million a year. It spends $500,000 to $700,000 a month to help house families under it's Section 8 voucher program. “The last four years we've received either cuts in federal funding or we stayed pretty much stagnant. That pretty much becomes a cut,” said Hassel.

Urbina is waiting for surgery to clear up blood clots so he can return to work. The family receives temporary assistance for needy families (TANF), which has paid the rent for the past several months, but at 11 a.m. again, they're in the same position.

“We're pressured because we don't know what's going to happen tomorrow,” said Urbina.

The housing authority said there is a waiting list of more than 800 people who are trying to get into a home of their own. The housing authority is meeting with the family to see if it can help.
