EL PASO, Texas —

Family members of Edward Najera, 77, said doctors told them he died from the human West Nile virus on Tuesday, and El Paso Department of Public Health officials said they are now investigating six new cases of the virus.

Nejera was one of nine cases of the virus in the county confirmed by the health department.

His brother told KFOX14 News that Najera would spend a lot of time in his garden at his home out in the Lower Valley.

"He was having the time of his life in his garden," said Richard Najera. "We remembered he was complaining about all the mosquitoes and how he couldn't go out to pick his squash."

Najera's wife asked that a picture of her late husband not be shared during this difficult time for the family.

Nejera leaves behind a wife, two daughters and one son.

So far, department officials have confirmed cases of the virus in the following ZIP codes: 79935, 79912, 79915, 79936, 7907 and 79905. There was one female and eight male victims whose ages range between 25 and 81.

"We continue to ask that residents take precautions so that they are not bitten by mosquitoes, which is how this disease is transmitted," said Michael Hill, public health director.

Dona Ana County health officials have confirmed two cases of West Nile virus in Dona Ana County - two men aged 50 and 76.

The health department is planning on hosting presentations to the community to educate them on prevention.

More information can be found at the health department's website or call 915-771-5727.
