El Paso Police Department
EL PASO, Texas —
The family of a man hit and killed while driving his scooter Monday said they are praying for the man, a Fort Bliss soldier, that hit him. El Paso police said that soldier ran the red light.
"We've been married 44 years, so he's my soul mate, my partner, I'm going to miss him," said the victim's wife, Gloria Flores. "We were going to go to England."
Sixty-four-year-old Jose Flores had big plans with his wife in the coming months after retiring three months ago. His wife said he had found a way to save money.
"Gas was going up," said Flores.
So Jose bought a scooter a few years ago.
"He would drive the scooter to work, but it's only five minutes away, cause he worked at Beaumont at the VA," said Flores.
Monday, Flores took the scooter on a different route. This time that route was a little farther.
"It was a nice day. So he went towards the bank," said Flores.
Jose wouldn't make it home.
"He said, 'leave it. I'll make it when I get up,'" said Flores' wife.
Those are the last words Flores told his wife. About 5:30 p.m. Monday, she got a knock on the door of their northeast El Paso home. It was El Paso police to deliver the news.
"They tried CPR, but he didn't make it," said Flores as she began to tear up.
Flores was hit at the intersection of Diana and Gateway North.
"I guess, I don't know he was in a hurry," said Flores.
Police said the driver of the Dodge Charger, a Fort Bliss soldier, 24-year-old Merari Williams ran the red light.
"Praying for him," said Flores' son
Even though angry, Flores' wife and three kids said they know justice will be served the same way their dad served the country.
"I know maybe he got a glimpse of that flag," said Flores' son.
That flag is flown high at the corner of Diana and the Gateway North.
Williams has not been charged in the accident. Police said speed and alcohol were not factors.
