Family Displaced After Ceiling Collapses

July 31, 2006 —

Northeast resident Rachel Rosales was desperate for help when her home started to fall apart.

"There is a home, it's just condemned. Everything is going down on us. I work but I don't have the money to afford it," Rosales said on a rainy Monday morning.

For the last couple of days, the situation for Rosales, her children and her grandchildren has gone from bad to worse. Buckets have taken the place of furniture.

"We didn't sleep at all last night because we had to use the buckets on the house and blankets and everything," said Rosales.

The roof has caved in inside several rooms of the duplex.

"As it continues raining, water continues to collect on top of the roof," said Miriam Venavidez, Rosales' daughter-in-law.

The electric company shut down the power at the home because of the danger of the water inside the home. The family was asked to leave because the conditions are not livable.

Meanwhile the family tried to salvage anything they could.

They removed the water from the flat roof with buckets, but it doesn't help that it keeps raining.

"We have no place to go," said Rosales.
