DENVER, Colo —

A murder-suicide in Denver involving a former Canutillo High School student leaves a local family devastated.

Denver police believe that Mayra Perez, 23, shot her three children, Neveah Morales, 5, Eric Perez, 2, and Isabelle Perez, 3, before turning the gun on herself.

Isabelle was the only survivor.

Perez's family met at her parents' house Thursday and spoke with KFOX14 about what happened.

"She was a good sister, she was a good woman, she was a good mother, and I feel so sad because I didn't catch up with her in time to tell her I'm pregnant and that she's gonna be an aunt again," said Faviola Nunez, one of Mayra's sisters. "I still can't believe it, I can't, I keep myself strong for everything, for my dad and my mom, but I can't believe it, I don't think I'm going to believe it until I see her dead."

One of Mayra's other sisters, Sandra, says people shouldn't rush to judgment until they know all the facts about what happened.

"Don't blame her, until we know what happened, don't blame anybody until we know who it was, because there's still no proof that it was her," she said. "She was a really happy woman, and a great mom, and I'm going to miss her."

A third sister of Mayra's, Liliana Castro, said Mayra's husband, Ricky Perez, is in total shock.

"He just left from the house one day before, and when he came back, he found my sister and my nephew on the floor, he can't believe that they're dead," Castro said. "I talked to my brother and he said one of the guns is missing."

The family told KFOX14 that Isabelle's condition is improving, and that she opened her eyes in the hospital Thursday.

KFOX14 spoke with Jose Morales, the grandfather of Mayra's daughter Neveah. His son Eddie is Neveah's father.

"He's confused. I think the family members know more about what happened'cause they're the ones that have been communicating with the police up there," Morales said.

He told KFOX14 it was rough on Eddie when Mayra moved away to Colorado with his daughter, but the pain he is feeling now doesn't compare.

"You don't want to see somebody going up there and coming back in a box," Morales said.
