Families Settle Into New Homes After 2006 Floods

Mother Nature wasn't kind to Victoria Cervantes and her family.

"All we wanted to do was get out. We all got out of the house and my daughter, who lives next door, ran over to our house and we climbed on the roof," said Victoria Cervantes, of west El Paso.

Her home, along with many others on Mowad Road, fell victim to the 2006 floods.

"I felt very sad because I thought I was going to be homeless," said Cervantes.

However, KFOX reported that the city bought their homes and chipped in the extra funds so they could move into new ones.

"Their homes appraised, averaged in the $90,000 range...and to find a house on the westside for $90,000, it was very, very difficult," said Cindy Evans of Remax Real Estate.

Her old home was bigger, but the new one still has the same number of bedrooms. It also doesn't need any repairs. According to Evans, the city really went the extra mile.

"I don't know if any other city has done this for these families. I mean, for the city to go out and do what they did to buy their homes and replace them with homes, it's just amazing," said Evans.

Cervantes is very grateful for the city's help and, for her, the whole ordeal was divine intervention.

"It was a blessing from God. He blessed us with this house," said Cervantes.

Mowad Road wasn't the only place where families had to relocate. The floods also forced the demolition of homes and property on Fiesta Drive and Saipan Place. In addition to help from the city, FEMA has given money to families and provided some new furniture and appliances. The Red Cross also stepped in to provide essential items.
