FABENS, Texas —

A Fabens family is mourning the loss of a loved one.

An extreme automotive sport turned deadly over the weekend when a driver lost control and crashed into a crowd of people, killing a Fabens woman.

According to family members, 68-year-old Martha Camacho was everyone's grandmother and the person they considered the rock the family leaned on.

"It was a normal Sunday, she just called me and said take me (to the event). Everyone got in the truck and we left," said Paulette Pacheco.

Pacheco said she became part of the family when she married Camacho's grandson. She said she was immediately welcomed. Pacheco said Camacho wanted to go to Tequila's Bar on Sunday to watch the mud races and a concert.

"When we got there, she was happy and we were all happy, the whole family was there," said Pacheco.

Pacheco and Camacho along with her 2-year-old granddaughter and other family members were spectators at the mud race behind Tequila's Bar. El Paso sheriff's officials said a driver lost control and drove into the crowd, pinning Camacho against a pickup truck parked where she was sitting.

"It knocked them out of the way and the little girl fell on her face and her grandma fell on top of her," said Pacheco.

Pachecho was not injured. But Camacho, her niece and granddaughter were all taken to the hospital. Camacho died from the injuries she sustained. The investigations continues, but according to sheriff's officials, it is unlikely that charges will be filed.

"We just hope that everything comes out OK with the family. It's a real big family and we all depended on her, everybody," said Pacheco.
