Expect More Airline Fees This Summer

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

As the summer months approach also coming is one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. But as the economy continues to crawl, airlines try to lift themselves with some extra revenue. So far it’s been reported that from Memorial Day to Labor Day there will be 78 days where airlines will be charging a peak travel surcharge from $10 up to $30. And the surcharge is coming from major carriers like American, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways.

“They keep tacking on every time, just a little bit more, just a little bit more,” said Edie McAlanis of San Antonio.

The good news is so far Southwest Airlines says it will not be implementing a surcharge.

“I think it determines what airline people fly with. I mean look at Southwest’s line, they have a line and the rest of these airlines have nothing,” said Danny Everret who was getting ready to leave the El Paso International Airport heading to San Francisco via Southwest.

If you do fly with an airline that hits you with a peak travel surcharge just note that the $30 charge will more than likely come on a Sunday so try to fly on days during the week when it’s less busy.

“I check for bargains on line. If I don't get a bargain I don't go,” said McAlanis.

“I guess just pay attention to the charges whenever I do shop,” said Belinda Lopez of El Paso.
