Evidence Points To Arson In Church Fire

HORIZON CITY, Texas —

John Spencer, a member of Horizon Bible Church, was awakened at about midnight Wednesday when heavy smoke was seen billiowing from the roof of the church.

"My neighbor across the street came to ring my doorbell. He said, 'I’m sorry to wake you up Mr. Spencer, but your church is on fire,'" said Spencer.

What was first thought to be an air-conditioning fire turned out to be a crime. Fire Marshal Steve Hoeller told KFOX he found at least three of the church's windows shattered and the back door had been broken into. The area around Horizon Bible Church will remain taped off until investigators finish collecting the evidence they need.

The church is located on the corner of Horizon Boulevard and Duanesburg Street.

Horizon City firefighters said the fire started in one of office buildings behind the worship room, and it didn't spread because doors that connect the three buildings were shut.

About a dozen church members showed up while firefighters were still trying to put out the fire.

"God will provide. We're still going to meet. The church started in a garage, so we'll meet somewhere. God's work will not be stopped," said Spencer.

Investigators estimate damage to the church at $100,000. The building did not have insurance.

If you have any information on this crime, call the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, 546-2280.
