EPPD Cracks Down On Underage Drinking

May 27, 2006 —

The Memorial Day weekend combined with high school graduations has El Paso police on high alert for underage drinking.

The police department along with Kinleys House of Coffee and Tea is holding an event trying to discourage teens from consuming alcohol.

Eighteen local bands participated along with guest speakers Mayor John Cook and Representative Steve Ortega.

100 additional officers have been working since Thursday to keep an eye out for drunk drivers.

"They can't consume any alcohol, at all not even a sip and drive, for anyone under the age of 21, so they will be cited for that and their car will be taken away," said Officer David Perea, El Paso Police Department.

Teens caught driving under the influence will have their license suspended and a $200 ticket.

Police warn parents can also get arrested for providing alcohol to a minor who is not their child.
