Final ruling over board of managers expected in March
Final ruling over board of managers expected in March

The clock is ticking for a final decision to come down from the state over the leadership of El Paso Independent School District trustees.

In a hearing held in Austin at the Texas Education Agency's offices on Thursday, the attorneys for both the TEA and the school district prepared their final arguments over the TEA'S decision to appoint a board of managers to oversee EPISD board of trustees.

Back in December, TEA's commissioner, Michael Williams, requested that the board be stripped of its powers because it failed to catch the district-wide cheating scandal and was not effective in investigating it.

However, the trustees' attorney has argued that the board has been complying with the demands of TEA.
Among the summary of arguments are:
That the TEA refused to help the district for two years
The EPISD board has cooperated fully with TEA
EPISD is well-managed
EPISD has taken appropriate and timely personnel actions

"I believe that our attorney Mr. (Anthony) Saffi did an outstanding job of presenting our position, and at this point we await the decision by Mr. Timmins (who is the TEA's chief investment officer and is presiding over the hearing)," said Isela Castanon-Williams.

Castanon-Williams was the only board member who attended the hearing.
A decision on the replacement of the board of trustees with a board of managers is expected no later than March 6.
