EL PASO, Texas —
El Paso Independent School District board members have the difficult task to start making cuts which means the loss of jobs for dozens of district employees.
EPISD board members heard from high school librarians in their district as they discuss reducing a team of two to only one per high school.
"My main concern are my students. I'm very nervous that I won't be able to provide the services that we are now providing them as a team," said Gloria Avalos, the head librarian at Burges High School.
June Martin, the head librarian at Chapin High School said she's already experiencing the stress having to work by herself when the second librarian left her position a month ago.
"I've had to turn away students, I've had to turn away classes and teachers. I can't help them. I can't contribute," said Martin.
But EPISD trustees said they have to find cuts. EPISD is expecting a 5 percent cut to its budget which means a $23 million reduction. Board President Patricia Hughes said the board has been trying to make cuts without affecting the classroom.
"Twenty-three million dollars, eventually it will affect classroom. But were going to do as little of that as possible," said Hughes.
But these librarian feel it's going to affect students.
"Services will be cut. We won't be able to have extended hours. If I'm with one student, others will have to wait," said Avalos.
