EPISD Cuts $5.6 Million, More To Come

By Monica Balderrama

EL PASO, Texas —

EPISD board members voted to eliminate 116 positions in order to save money as the district faces millions of dollars in cuts from the state, but there could be more to come.

The reductions that were made totaled $5.6 million in savings for the district, which is just a fraction of the goal of $28 million in cuts.

Here's the breakdown on the $5.6 million: The board eliminated 26 At-Risk coordinators, which adds up to $1.2 million in savings. $1.3 million was shaved off after reducing 62 language proficiency assessment committee clerks. The biggest cut came from the 28 positions at central office that saves the district $3.1 million.

The At-Risk coordinators's mid-range salary is about $50,000 a year, while the language proficiency clerk's mid-range salary is about $20,000 a year.

The central office positions include hourly employees, mid-level and top-level employees. But no one with a salary over $100,000 at central office was cut.

District officials are working on placing the 116 people whose jobs were eliminated into other jobs within the district.
