EL PASO, TX —

Former EPISD Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia was sentenced yesterday  to 42 months in jail and ordered to pay $180,000 is restitution to EPISD.

In June, Garcia plead guilty to conspiracy charges and cheating on test scores, officials said.

EPISD Board President Isela CastaCastañon-Williams released the following statement:

"Today's sentencing of Former Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia does not
bring justice to those students who have been tragically harmed by his
actions, nor does it restore the trust that our district has lost with
the community. The EPISD has a long and difficult road ahead to
restore the trust of our students and the public, and under the
leadership of our new Interim Superintendent, Vernon Butler, with the
support of the Board of Trustees, we are determined to take corrective
actions and continue implementing the necessary reforms to prevent
this tragedy from occurring again."

On Friday, Garcia was ordered to begin serving his sentence immediately at La Tuna prison.
