El Paso Independent School District
EL PASO, Texas —
KFOX 14 has learned the teacher who is behind a questionable class assignment hasn't been on campus since KFOX 14 aired the story.
KFOX 14 is choosing not to name the fourth-grade teacher at Hughey Elementary School who is at the center of the controversy.
El Paso Independent School District officials confirmed they have put that teacher on paid leave pending an investigation.
KFOX 14 first showed the drawings on Wednesday, the day after the 11th anniversary of 9/11.
Parents said the teacher instructed the 9-year-olds to draw the disturbing images of the burning twin towers and people jumping out of the windows and even told them Afghans hate Americans.
Officials sent this statement Friday afternoon:
"District and campus administrators immediately launched an investigation into the specific assignment that led to the drawings. The investigation has not been completed; however, the teacher is on leave pending the results of the investigation."
Some parents however, are demanding something be done.
Courtney Flagg, whose child is a student in the class, sent this statement:
"My son has lived the military lifestyle since birth. His father and I have both served and been on deployment and training missions that caused us to be away from him for months to even now a year as my husband is now deployed. We constantly tell him why we had to do it and why we choose too.
"I am disturbed by the pictures but more enraged about the callous remarks and statements that were written in captions such as 'one way ticket to heaven,' 'I got a persuit (parachute).'
"My son came home on 9/10 asking me questions about the people of Afghanistan and why they hated us so much, and said that his teacher told them that they hated all Americans and wanted to kill us all. I told him all of them do not hate us that it was only a group of people who committed that crime not the whole country. He was frightened to attend school on 9/11.
"I have not spoken to his teacher and have been trying to get a hold of the principal but he has been out for meetings. I do understand the 9/11 is apart of our history but I think this is a lesson that went totally wrong, there is nothing funny about that day and I think its to much for any child to be depicting this horrific scene but more so a military child who parents are the ones who actually put it on the line for freedom."
Parents said district officials have been at the campus speaking to each individual student.
Even before this investigation is complete, district officials have already offered an apology.
