EL PASO, Texas —

An El Paso woman crossing a southcentral street has died.

The victim, Maria Araujo of the 400 block of Buena Vista, was seriously injured right after she was hit by a Dodge Caravan.

The 71-year-old woman, according to El Paso police at the scene, said she was crossing Delta. Not using the crosswalk, Araujo was struck by a van driven by Rosalia Ontiveros.

Police said Ontiveras had the right of way at the intersection of Delta and Buena Vista.

She was taken to University Medical Center.

Police told KFOX14 they don't believe speed or alcohol were factors in this accident.

An investigation is ongoing.

This is the 49th traffic death of 2012 compared to 67 during this same time period in 2011.
