El Paso's Children's Hospital celebrates first anniversary this month

By Joshua Zuber

EL PASO, Texas —

Thirty medical specialists are working at the El Paso Children's Hospital.

KFOX14 talked to several of them. They have a variety of areas of expertise, but share one thing in common: El Paso is where they feel at home.

Several of them said they were born and/or raised in the Sun City.

It is that draw that brought many of these professionals back to El Paso from cities like Dallas and Houston thanks to the new 225,000 square foot hospital.

"When I heard about the new children's hospital that was being built I was really excited because I could come back to what I considered home for me and really help the kids locally in El Paso," Lisa Hartman, assistant professor of pediatrics hematology/oncology, said.

And, of course, it's a chance to feel like they're back home.

"My favorite emotion was (that I) drove the same route that I drove to high school that I do for my job. You know, passing Chico's Tacos on Alameda Avenue. It was just awesome. So that day I just had to go to Chico's Tacos for lunch," Lisa Ayoub-Rodriguez, a pediatric Hospitalist said.

The 122-bed facility they say is comparable to other large-city pediatric hospitals.

"It really is state of the art. It has wonderful facilities," Hartman said.

That is something Hartman said our area needs.

"There have been 60 new diagnosis of cancer since the hospital opened just a year ago," Hartman said.
