EL PASO, Texas —
The spike in violence in downtown El Paso began early Saturday morning with a shooting, and then a stabbing that same night and overnight another stabbing that sent one man to Thomason hospital in critical condition. "It does surprise me because you don't hear about it all that often and it makes me wonder if it wasn't related to the drug violence that's been happening recently in Juarez, I hope it's not spilling over,” said Joshua Frederick, of central El Paso. Police aren't tying the violence that happened this weekend to the drug violence in Juarez or a gang.
"If it's happening in the same area of town, then it's probably going to be related to the same cartel or gang or whatever is down there,” added Frederick.
As KFOX reported, early Saturday morning, a 24-year-old man was critically injured in a drive-by shooting outside of Myst and Studio 69 nightclubs. That same night the doorman of the clubs was stabbed twice and shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday another man is stabbed multiple times just a few blocks down on the 200 block of Overland Avenue.
"I definitely think the police should patrol more often down there and keep an eye on things,” Frederick said. “Downtown has gotten to be kind of seedy recently; they need to keep a watch on it."
Witnesses told officers the two men were arguing in the middle of the street when the victim was stabbed.
Police blocked off the road and a portion of the Greyhound bus parking lot where they said the victim walked over and collapsed.
Reports from some sources say the victim died from his injuries but police have not yet confirmed that.
This morning police aren't releasing any information on the suspect but they do say he will be facing aggravated assault charges if he is caught.
