El Pasoans React To City Hall Shooting

EL PASO, Texas —

Stray bullets hit the west side of the City Hall building on the ninth floor Tuesday morning. El Paso Police said one bullet made its way inside the office of one of the assistant city managers. No one was injured, but some El Pasoans said it hit too close too home.

A report of a shooting at City Hall came in just before 5 p.m. Helicopters circled the building as police began their investigation.

At the same time, Mexican officials were dealing with their own shooting at Avenida Norzagaray and Cloro, which is about 3 miles from City Hall. A Mexican federal agent was gunned down along with an innocent bystander.

"It does appear that the rounds may have come from an incident that occurred in Juarez. There was a large assault that occurred in Juarez in close proximity from City Hall," said Darrel Petry, of the El Paso Police Department.

One of the seven stray bullets made its way through the ninth floor window, through a wall, and then hit a picture frame where it finally stopped. City Hall employees were inside the building, but no one was injured.

"Now that it's this close I think it's pretty scary," said Juan Villegas, of west El Paso.

Villegas used to go to Juarez all the time, but after having friends and other loved ones killed in the ongoing violence in the city, he stopped going out of fear for his own life. Now he said he is scared to go to downtown El Paso or anywhere near the border.

"I know there is no control on that side of the country," said Villegas.

Villegas said it doesn't matter what our law enforcement does on the U.S. side of the border, after Tuesday's shooting it just proves that people in El Paso can also be the innocent bystander killed. Other El Pasoans said this is just an isolated incident or at least they hope.

"I still like our chances that it's not gonna happen again," said Eda Fuerte, of west El Paso.

El Paso police are still investigating the incident, but said at this point there is no evidence that anyone inside City Hall was a target. As for Mexican officials they are still looking for the gunmen in Tuesday's attacks.
