El Pasoans react to NRA's call for armed officers at every school

One week after the deadly shooting in Newtown, Conn., the National Rifle Association spoke out, calling on Congress to place armed security officers at every school across the country.

In his speech on Friday morning, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said, "The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

El Pasoans, like the rest of the nation, have mixed feelings about the proposal. Lots of people voiced some differences with the NRA, which has 40 million members.

Arlinda Valencia, the president of Ysleta Independent School District Teachers Association, said people might agree with the NRA if there could be a police officer at every school. However, she said that would be improbable because of lack of funding. Having anything less than a trained police officer is unacceptable, such as a armed school employee.

"Not even a security guard," said Valencia. "Much less having teachers have guns."

People tell KFOX News that they agree with Valencia.

"No, I think definitely that's not the way to go. We need to keep our kids away from guns -- just having a gun close by to our children does not sound like a good idea," said Gerardo Sanchez.

Instead Sanchez calls for more metal detectors on campuses.

"I don't think that's going to solve the problem. More guns to take care of other guns...I don't think that's going to solve the problem," said Grace Garcia.

Valencia, like parents, thinks more attention needs to be given to mental health, especially once students exit the school system, and parents also need to be more involved in their children's lives.

"As parents, paying more attention. Taking care of our kids...paying more attention to what they are doing [will help stop these shootings]," said Cynthia Melendez.

Yet the NRA argues that children across America in "gun-free school zones" have been left vulnerable to "monsters and predators" in our society.
