El Pasoans Look Back On 2010

EL PASO, Texas —

2010 brought a visit from President Barack Obama in August and a high profile murder case involving David Marmolejo. He is accused of killing his mother. The story captured an audience and led to a hung jury. An ongoing public corruption case also found the Socorro mayor and other public figures entering FBI offices.

From highs to lows, with 48 hours left in 2010 there are plenty of headlines to look back on.

"How we were reported to be one of the safest cities in America, one of the big cities," said Mack Golsbury.

The announcement came as a surprise to many.

"I'm very surprised by that because we live by Juarez, Mexico, where so many people are being killed and murdered," said Golsbury.

A record number 3,000 people have been killed across the border. All the deaths have been directly linked to the ongoing drug war. The violence has not only affected not only Juarez, but El Paso as well.

"I have friends that have had really sad stories, people are here on sanctuary whose families haven't made it out and are being held for ransom or are being tortured," said Roxanne Byler.

The Sun City out shined the negative attention by being named an All-America city in June. For many El Pasoans, it is sports that have put El Paso on the map.

In March, the UTEP men's basketball team made it to the big dance, but would then lose their coach.

"I saw the movie 'Glory Road' when I moved here, and I read the book," said Naroda Knox.

One of the advisers on the film, long-time Don Haskins assistant Tim Floyd, would make a return to El Paso.

"I saw the picture of him up there when he was younger," said Knox.

Floyd opened up the men's basketball season by “oranging” out the city properly renamed “Orangeville” for the day.

A few months later, the announcement for one of the oldest bowl games was made.

"What's really neat is the Sun Bowl game. To have two super teams coming here to play, what a thrill," said Luis Bustamante.

The long awaited acceptance from Norte Dame was announced. Their opponent is their one-time rivals the Miami Hurricanes.

"I think it's a great way to close out the year," said Bustamante.

El Pasoans are already looking ahead to the future. They said it’s time to deal with some of El Paso's economic problems.

"I would like to see some new development in the city, some new shopping centers, anything that pertains to growth," said Bustamante.
