El Pasoans Answer The Question: What Is Memorial Day?

EL PASO, Texas —

Thousands of El Pasoans enjoy being off on Memorial Day, but not everyone with the vacation day really knows what Memorial Day is and why it's celebrated. It was once a somber day to recognize all the men and women who gave their lives for their country. It goes beyond a century-long tradition, yet some in El Paso don't have a clue what it means.

"Isn't it the Veteran's Day? When we keep in mind the guys that went to Vietnam right?," answered Ismael Silva of west El Paso.

Wrong. But Silva wasn't alone.

"Commerating the veterans of war," answered Enrique Villatoro of west El Paso.

Memorial Day was once known as Decoration Day when it was enacted back in 1865.

"It's to remember the people that served in the military that gave their lives so we could have our freedoms," answered 17-year-old Christian Servusa.

After asking a handful of people, 17-year-old Christian was one of the only people that knew why many American flags will be flying at half staff.

"It's in memory of all the soldiers right, cause it's not Dia De Los Muertos, right?," asked Enas Rodriguez of northeast El Paso.

No, but Rodriguez was obviously not alone. With discount prices on food, cars, furniture some say the holiday has lost its meaning.

"People now see it now more as a day off," said Villatoro.

The day used to be for spending time at the gravesites of the country's fallen heroes decorating the headstones and showing appreciation, but now days it means barbecues, festivals, and a kick off to summer vacation.

"Just stay home and relax and kind of just kick back," said Villatoro.
