EL PASO, Texas —

The El Paso Zoo welcomes Hot Lips, a female Slender-tailed Meerkat, to its family.

Hot Lips was born three months ago on Oct. 22, and since then, she's been off-exhibit with the remainder of the mob.

She received her first weigh-in about 10 days ago, and she weighs a little less than a pound -- 0.68 pounds. Zoo officials said she is not big enough to run around in the yard with the rest of the mob.

"She's a typical baby. She's always around somebody and copies them. If they stand, she stands, if they dig, she digs," says Area Supervisor Andrea Skinner.

Zookeepers and veterinary staff kept Hot Lips behind the scenes to keep her away from predators and shelter her from the cold weather. Young meerkats are small and run the risk of having tunnels collapse on them without being able to climb out, officials said.

Zoogoers can get a glimpse of Hot Lips on exhibit as long as the weather permits, officials said.
