El Paso Water Utilities needs your help conserving water during drought

EL PASO, Texas —

Farmers and water officials seem to agree that El Paso is in its worst drought in over 50 years.

El Paso Water Utilities employees hit the streets Saturday to recruit its customers to help conserve water.

EPWU spokesperson Martin Bartlett said that one thing to consider is how long people take to shower.

Mary Maese lives in West El Paso. She said her showers can take up to 45 minutes on any given day.

Mario Sobal-Varro said that sometimes he'll shower for 30 minutes.

"It's like an event," Sobal-Varro said. "I'll just like kind of relax and absorb my thoughts in the shower."

Bartlett said that's one of the main reasons that hundreds of gallons of water are wasted each day.

"Our homes and our bathrooms are one of the biggest places where folks waste water indoors," Bartlett said.

Bartlett said not to use a toilet as a trash can and constantly flush it. He also said that people should look for leaks around the house and fix them.

Most water, however, is wasted outdoors. Bartlett said that people need to be prudent about following lawn-watering schedules and not overwatering their lawns.

"If you can easily stick a screwdriver into the ground, it's probably been overwatered," Bartlett said.

Bartlett and other EPWU employees spent Saturday giving out free water-efficient shower heads to customers. But whichever shower head is used, EPWU recommends limiting showers to 5 minutes.
