El Paso veteran dies just weeks after celebrating 107th birthday

By El Paso Times

EL PASO, Texas —

One of the oldest veterans in El Paso, retired Maj. Willie J. Kucera, died Monday of natural causes. He was 107.

Kucera had celebrated his 107th birthday July 28 at the Great American Steakburger with more than 60 friends and extended family members.

"His mind was sharp until the end," David Thackston, 58, who was a member of the Military Order of World Wars with Kucera told the El Paso Times. "He would talk about things from 50 to 60 years ago with clarity. He was just a neat guy to be around."

"I plan on making it to 118 years old," Kucera said at the party.

Thackston said that until two months ago Kucera was still driving and taking care of his house, birds and turtles.
