El Paso Signs Forced To Change From UPPER CASE

Related

EL PASO, Texas —

Changes will soon be coming to El Paso street signs, as new federal requirements are revealed.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will require all street name signs to change from all capital letters to upper and lower case letters.

The city will also have to test and replace any signs that do not meet stricter reflectivity levels.

According to City of El Paso Department of Transportation officials, the city owns and manages approximately 70,000 signs.

“Any new signs that go in, we're going to start with those new reflectivity requirements,” said Daryl Cole, El Paso’s transportation director. “The main change will be the street name signs from upper case to lower case."

Cole estimates the sign replacements will cost upwards of $1.2 million.
