El Paso Prepares For Gustav Evacuees

EL PASO, Texas —

The city of El Paso is preparing for evacuees from hurricane Gustav.

Several El Paso organizations including, the El Paso fire department, Salvation Army and the Red Cross, spent most of Saturday setting up a shelter at the convention center in anticipation of the hurricane.

The group set up hundreds of cots and created a makeshift dining hall.

The El Paso chapter of the Red Cross is preparing for the worst.

Saturday Mark Matthys of the American Red Cross told KFOX, "We are expecting a few hundred. It could be more than that. It could be less than that. We planned as if we are going to get 600-800."

Even though most of the evacuees that coming over the weekend will be from hospitals along the coast, the shelter will serve as a place for anyone dodging the storms path.

"We are setting up cots, because if we do have family members that do come with them we want to offer them a place to stay. We want to be ready to help however we can," Matthys said.

The state of texas is preparing for the potential of an estimated 45,000 evacuees.
