El Paso Police Increase Patrol For Halloween

EL PASO, Texas —

The cash register at Party World on Dyer Street didn’t stop beeping all afternoon on Halloween. Last-minute shoppers swamped the store looking for scary, and not so scary, costumes.

“I don't usually do the spooky things,” said Tiffiny Jones, of Fort Bliss. The mother of five knows a thing or two about having a safe Halloween, and she said it starts with having the right costume.

“Nothing to cover the ears or the eyes. Nothing to cover the blind spots. Just (do something) real simple, put something on, throw some paint on your face,” said Jones.

While still shopping for her son’s costumes, she said she refuses to let her children wear anything dark in color -- all costumes must be bright.

“See how it's completely white and you could see it?” she said as she held up a costume.

One of the most popular items sold at Party World have been glow sticks. The manager said they've sold 300 to 400. They’re right by the register and most parents get them as they're checking out. They said it’s good way to keep their children visible in the dark when cars might not see them.

“That's why I'm buying little glow sticks, so I can stick them all over her,” said Jesus Poblano, of northeast El Paso, whose daughter is a year and a half old.

“They wear the little glow sticks around their neck, and we got these little walkie-talkie phones just in case somebody gets lost,” said Jones.

El Paso police will have more officers patrolling neighborhoods, but they urge parents to stay close to their children while trick-or-treating.

Unlike previous years where Halloween has fallen on a weekday, this year it's on a Friday and police expect it to be a busy night.
