El Paso Police Arrest 33 People

EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police officers are using new means of arresting those who have outstanding criminal and traffic warrants. Officers working on Operation Corridor concentrated their efforts on Dyer Street and other high crime areas in the northeast. Officers arrested 33 people wanted on outstanding warrants and issued about 100 citations during the nine-hour special operation.

Here's how Operation Corridor is different from previous round-up efforts: Instead of looking for wanted people at their home, officers hope to catch them during routine traffic stops. Everyone who was pulled over on traffic violations during the special operation had their driver's license checked for outstanding warrants.

"They actually got pulled over for not having light on their license plate, and they ran his driver's license. He had warrants, so they took him in," said Melissa Herrera, whose sister and brother-in-law were stopped on Dyer Street overnight.

Twenty additional officers were brought in to work from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday.

Organizers of Operation Corridor said most of those arrested had traffic warrants, three were arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, two were violating their parole and were wanted on other felony charges. A sergeant told KFOX one of those arrested on criminal warrants assaulted a police officer who was arresting him. The officer wasn't injured.

Some people bonded out, others ended up at the El Paso County Jail.
