EL PASO, Texas —

Two local heroes had parks named after them.

Spc. Adrian Garcia grew up in El Paso's lower valley right across the street from a new park that was named after him on Tuesday.

After graduating from Ysleta High School, Garcia joined the Army where he lost his legs in 2007 after a rocket-propelled grenade attack in Iraq.

Residents in the neighborhood of 520 B Southside Road rallied to get the park named after Garcia.

"I know for a fact that this city doesn't forget it's soldiers, even though you hear it a lot. This is just further proof that I'm still in everyone's thoughts and prayers," said Garcia.

The decision to name the park after Garcia was unanimous during a City Council meeting.

Formerly known as the Loretto-Lincoln Park, a park located in central El Paso also received a new name.

It's been named after 25-year-old Liz Morayma Gonzalez, who was killed in 2010 when she was hit by a car on Interstate 10.

Gonzalez, a licensed vocational nurse, had pulled over to help another woman who had just crashed on icy roads.

Gonzalez's family hopes the park reminds people to be selfless.

"People shouldn't shy away from that. We should always try to do good things and help others even if we don't know them. Help strangers," said Erica Gonzalez, Liz's sister.

Gonzalez said they have a foundation also in Liz's honor that provides scholarships to future nurses.

They plan to give two away when the park is officially renamed.
