El Paso Neighborhood Haunted?

Some supernatural happenings around a Kern Place home have spooked an El Paso resident.

West El Paso resident Chris Rakas told KFOX he has heard some strange noises inside his home and believes ghosts may be to blame.

"I just moved into my house about two weeks ago and I started hearing noises. I haven't seen anything, but just hearing things have spooked me out a little bit," said Rakas.

Rakas also showed KFOX a piece of paper he found in his cellar which may have some satanic messages typed on it. "It just says here: eternal warning. This is a mark of the beast; the Anti-Christ," said Rakas.

Local historian Leon Metz said he believes Rakas' story and that the Kern Place area has a history of hauntings. Metz said, "Almost every home on Rim Road, at one time or another, has been occupied by ghosts."

According to Metz, the ghosts may have origins from the early 1900s, when the legendary Pete Kern founded the area. He claims many people were dealing with tough conditions at the time, and may still be haunting the area today. Metz said, "Maybe it's simply a miner on his way, or a lonesome cowboy who stopped and never rode any further."

Kern Place is one of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso. The community was created in 1914 after Pete Kern became wealthy and settled in the area after arriving from Alaska.
