Gym memberships expected to increase

EL PASO, Texas —

New Year's resolutions are starting to creep into people's minds, and some would say that losing weight is at the top of their list.

With many residents in the borderland trying to keep up with their goals and New Year's resolutions, gym memberships are expected to skyrocket in the next month. A local gym official said that the next two or three months are usually the busiest.

"So that's why we see that big jump, you know, for the first three months. We expect it to get busy," said Luis Leyva with Planet Fitness.

Men's Health magazine recently ranked El Paso as the third-fattest U.S. city, and Men's Fitness ranked the city seventh in a list of fattest cities back in 2009.

Gyms in El Paso usually have membership sales around the holidays, and Planet Fitness officials said the gym will honor other gyms' deals from across the city.
