El Paso Fire Department Inspect Nightclubs For Safety

EL PASO, Texas —

The El Paso Fire Department reports some area clubs are safer than others.

Whiskey Dick's in East El Paso made some major changes to make sure the scary stuff Halloween night is in the spirit of the holiday and not a reality.

Recently, the bar installed a $35,000 fire sprinkler and fire alarm system on the El Paso fire marshal’s recommendation.

The fire department told KFOX not all El Paso nightclubs are created equal when it comes to safety. They said Whiskey Dick's is one of a handful of bars that has acted on their recommendations to install safety features. Bar owners told KFOX they don't mind making the investment, if it's in their costumers best interest.

"Nobody likes to incur the cost but we went ahead and did it because our customers mean that much to us," said Rick Dow, an entertainment director.

Bar patrons like Amanda Alford agree.

"It makes me feel very comfortable. We have all heard about fires in other clubs, in other bigger cities, so at least you know you can come to Whiskey Dick's and be in a safe environment," she said.

The El Paso Fire Marshals will be conducting safety inspections checking for violations at area night clubs Friday night as many take part in Halloween festivities.
