El Paso is in the final stages of designing its $90 million street car system

EL PASO, Texas —

Street cars are a big part of El Paso's history.

These street cars look like they could be headed back to the Sun City.

Design firm URS presented what the best options are for how the city should design the system.

"It's a single-track loop that's approximately 5.2 miles," said URS Vice President Rick Nannenga.

Nannenga said the least expensive option for the street cars themselves are replicas or brand new ones. But the City Council wants the old shells of El Paso's street cars to be refurbished, which will cost about a half million dollars more per streetcar to build.

There would be eight street cars.

The annual cost is about $4.6 million a year.

"It was discussed that a street car system will cost about 50 percent more than a traditional bus system. Now remember, there are different costs associated with a street car," said El Paso Deputy City Manger Jane Shang.

But city representative Courtney Niland said the system should pay for itself.

"We're going to look at the fact that there is a 9-1 return possibly. And along that particular corridor, you're going to be connecting (the University of Texas-El Paso), downtown El Paso. To me, you're going to see all kinds of development pop up," Niland said.

The cost of the project should remain on track, given that a proposed extension past Gloria Road was shot down Tuesday.
