El Paso Emergency Official: Ready And Waiting

EL PASO, Texas —

Emergency officials said they're ready to receive hundreds of evacuees from Hurricane Gustav. At the convention center, they can take in some 500 evacuees, and at Biggs Army Airfield they are prepared to shelter an additional 100 to 250 special-needs or medical evacuees.

"Most of it hinges on the storm's trajectory, what the storm is going to do," said Emergency Management Coordinator Deputy Chief Carlos Carmona.

El Paso expected to get evacuees from the Texas Gulf Coast, but with the hurricane changing directions, they now might come from farther east.

"Everything is ready. Everybody is on call, and there is a good chance we might receive people from Louisiana," said Carmona.

At the El Paso chapter of the Red Cross, they are also biding their time.

"All of our equipment is still in place, and people know that they could be called back at anytime if and when we're needed," said Mark Matthys, director of the Red Cross El Paso chapter.

However, until evacuees come in, they are not yet asking for any donations locally.

"The best way for the people of El Paso to help today is to make a financial contribution to one of the disaster-relief organizations, like the Red Cross," said Matthys.

Much like in 2005 with hurricane Katrina, El Pasoans KFOX spoke to welcome any evacuees with open arms.

"I think that is definitely a positive thing. I think we should be ready to help people out," said Yvonne Jimenez from East El Paso.

"Why not? If they are going to need help, we got a place for them to stay, let's help people out," said Joe Zavala from Tornillo.

Everyone KFOX spoke to said all of the organizations are working much better together than during Katrina, and everyone is more prepared.

If El Paso ends up receiving more evacuees than the 500 that can be housed at the convention center, there are contingency plans to open up more shelters.
