EL PASO, Texas —

Car thieves are targeting El Paso Community College parking lots, but they are looking for one car in specific according to campus police.

"Four cylinders, 35 miles, 35 dollars for gas for a full tank," said Amber Giron.

That's the reason EPCC student Giron gives for buying her Honda Civic.

"I pay for my car myself, out of my own pocket," she said.

That explains why Giron was outraged when she receives an email from campus police sent to all EPCC students. It said recently there has been a string of thefts of civics just like hers. Two were taken at the Rio Grande campus parking garage and one other from the Valle Verde campus.

"I bought a club," said Giron.

El Paso Police Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention Task Force officer, Stephen Plummer, said Giron did the right thing, but he isn't surprised by the thefts.

"They are the top stolen cars in the City of El Paso," said Plummer.

Last year, 58 Civics were stolen and only a month into this year four have been taken.

"We do have a lot of euro racers," said Plummer.

When they cars are racing, "you're gonna blow the engines," said Plummer.

To replace the engine Plummer said it costs thousands of dollars and that's why he said they are targets, especially at college campuses.

"The older civics fit the mode of college students. They buy them, they're very reliable," said Plummer.

Honda civics are easy to find in El Paso. In one parking lot KFOX 14 crews spotted two just a few parking spaces from each other.

"I have no other way getting of here, or going to work," said Giron.

Giron is hopeful the thieves will be caught soon, especially since the e-mail says they are being taken in the evening hours.

"I go to school at 6 in the morning and sometimes I have night classes so I'm here from 6 until 9 o'clock at night," she said.

During those same hours, EPCC officers are watching out.

"I saw two past by, so I think they're doing there job," said Giron.

Vehicle thefts at EPCC are nothing new. Last April, KFOX 14 reported eight being stolen. One man was arrested.

Plummer said one way to safe guard your car is to contact any regional command to have the vehicle VIN number etched in the windshield for free. He said makes it harder for thieves to sell parts. He also suggests registering vehicles in the departments H.E.A.T. program. The sticker placed on vehicles gives officers the right to stop the vehicle when spotted between the hours of 1 and 5 a.m. to make sure the driver is registered to that particular vehicle.

The EPCC Police Department is asking anyone with information on the thefts to call (915) 831-2200.
