El Paso Cannot Enforce New Cell Phone Ban In School Zones

EL PASO, Texas —

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, drivers in Texas will not be able to use their hand-held cell phone in school zones, but officers in El Paso will not be able to enforce the law. The city of El Paso has not put up signs warning the drivers which carry a fine up to $200.

“We didn’t know that the law was going to pass, therefore we didn’t know to budget for it,” said Assistant City Engineer Ted Marquez.

Marquez said the department will have to ask city council for an amendment to the budget to get funding. At minimum it will take $75,000 to get the signs up around school zones, but Marquez warned the figure could double. He said signs will not be up for another three months.

State legislators passed the bill, but did not provide any additional funding to help pay for the signs.

Parents picking up their children from Crocket Elementary School Monday afternoon, were disappointed to know that the drivers will not be held accountable.

“I think it’s disappointing and dangerous for the kids,” said Isaac Rodriguez. “I think it’s going to be a good law for kids when they walk home. They won’t have to be afraid when the cars come through.”
